Material Test Results (MTR) or sometimes called Material Test Reports, is a report or document to assure the quality of the material used. Also, this report is compliant with certain specifications and standards. These MTRs vary from company to company because they may have different ways of formatting and presenting the information. There are standard aspects that need to be present in all MTRs.
For U.S. suppliers there is an ASTM/ASME/UNS standard. ASTM stands for the American Society Testing and Materials and the ASME is the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The UNS is the Unified Numbering System, it is a grade numbering system used for most stainless steel. On all Material Test Results should be a description of the material including the dimensions and weight. Also, included should be the chemical composition as well as the mechanical properties.
These reports are important to provide proof to clients and inspectors that the material is up to specification and all code requirements. Another important reason for an MTRs is for jobs that have strict requirements for materials such as certain construction jobs for example. In addition, any type of job dealing with boilers, where water will be under pressure, you want to be assured the material will hold up.
